This time of year my mind always seems to be flooded with memories.
Some memories are funny, some warm and cozy and a few bitter sweet.
I think it starts with the lights. Now I know white lights are very popular and supposed to be elegant and all. They just don't really do anything in particular for me.
I blame my Momma.
My Momma scoffed at those clear lights when they started showing up in stores. To her, it wasn't Christmas until everything was covered in tinsel, garland and multi-colored twinkle lights. Sorta like Dolly Parton all gussied up on a Saturday night. Over the top but still sexy.
When our neighbors started putting up those clear white lights it would elicit big eye rolls from my Mom. She despised them. The lights not the neighbors. One particular neighbor, who shall remain nameless, made the mistake of bragging on her new white lights and in the same breath insulted my Momma's colorful display. I can't remember what the woman's exact words were to Momma but the main idea was Mom's lights were gaudy and unsophisticated. Hrumph...that was..... a mistake.
After sweetly ending the conversation my Momma came into the house seething and scheming. Not a good combination.
She decided since her lights were so offensive to the neighbor they most certainly were worthy of year round display. Nobody puts my Momma down and gets away unscathed.
So it was. My mom kept her beautiful colored twinkle lights up the whole year. She turned them on every single night smirking to herself. Easter came and went, the Fourth of July was a particularly bright holiday that year and Halloween had never been so Merry! The neighbors were not happy. A few even causaly commented that Christmas was indeed over, to which my Mom just smiled....and continued to light those suckers up every night.
She did finally take them down a year and a half later. The neighbor never made the mistake of insulting my Momma's Christmas displays again and to this day we still use multi-colored lights to welcome the Holiday.
I wouldn't dare decorate with anything else.
My Momma would have a fit.
